Before I start I want to say Hello. I'm a Newbie here. 1st post :D

I want to start building niche sites and have some URL's with the word ipod in them. Can I use them or will Steve Jobs be breaking down my door some day.
    Thanks in advance

welcome! I wouldn't do it, unless you're an authorized reseller. no need to invite trouble...

just get a domain like "HiPod.com" and you can claim its just a coincidence that ipod is contained in the url :)

Except you won't be able to make that claim unless you use the site for something unrelated to iPods.

probably not a good idea, as the name is a world trademark for Apple.

    It's a violation of trademark.

However, that said, if you're using the domain in a positive light, Apple might do nothing. I wouldn't have bought them, but if I did, I'd use them.

Just keep in mind that Apple could (rather easily most likely) take the site at any time.

So, I'd use them for typical low-level sites and not for something you want to put a lot of effort and capital into.

And if nothing else, build a quick site and put it up for sale. Someone else might be interested in them.

It seems cybersquatting to take benefit of the goodwill of a registered trademark. I'll not encourage people to do it.

Just wondering what the difference is between having the word Xbox in a url which Microsoft dont seem to mind since there are a lot of high profile forums with the keyword and the word ipod, surely if its in a positive light they wouldnt care since you are driving them potential business.

    very sound advice,

also, if you plan on making a negative site, such as ipodsucks.com i think you may have some legal grounds to keep the domain... as sites like paypalsucks.com ebaysucks.com do exist... making such a site for profit maybe a bad idea...

If you're trying to sell the Ipod, and link to Apples site, and say how great the Ipod is and why everyone should have it, they have no reason to take you down.

Apple is pretty notorious for defending its' trademarks, but then again so is Apple Records....

I think you could get away with it if you have a clear announcement that says you have no official affiliation with iPod or Apple, and you are offering advice, reviews and news on the items for instance.

I doubt they would want to remove your site in that case.

Having said that I personally just couldn't be arsed when there's other, official sites doing the same thing. If you think you have a good idea though I would just go for it and see what happens, if anything.

    Hi
Try to understand that not just the word Ipod will do everything for you ok!
There are much more plenty of things we have to consider for this business.

One main thing is the content of website to consider and then metaphors and then link building and etc etc
