Hello, I see that many forums allow users to use yahoo emoticons when posting a thread/reply. (you can find them here http://messenger.yahoo.com/features/emoticons/ and they are also found on your computer when you install yahoo messenger). Also, the emoticons are stored locally, on the server; they are not linked to the ones on yahoo website. Is this legal? Do they have to get some permissions from yahoo? In other words, i want to build a web application that uses emoticons, and I'm thinking of using yahoo emoticons. Due to the architecture of the application and the software used, I can't get the emoticons from yahoo site, I have to store them on my server (or maybe incorporate them directly in the application, I don't know yet). Is this legal? Thanks
Here is a blog post i made on using yahoo emotions. http://tech43.blogspot.com/2008/09/yahoo-emotions-add-them-in-your-blogger.html however, you should wait for some senior webmasters here at DP to tell you about this issue.
See if yahoo released the emoticons and gave people to use them on their personal websites. If they haven't you need to get permission from yahoo first. You can also check around for some emoticans released to the public domain, there must be some out there.
@callmeminty Indeed, but the application uses links to emoticons from the yahoo site. @MelogKnaj How can I find out if yahoo released the emoticons? Thanks for the replies.
