Use subdomains to increase search ranking
I run a small family business servicing my local area hoping to get my website higher on google than my competitors for common search terms

Its difficult to use extra content or pages to increase SEO as most of the local businesses all offer the same thing

I was considering using several subdomains with the high ranked search words to improve google ranking to a landing page which then links to my main site
    example (not real websites)
    dog-school-smithsville.dogsworld.com
    dog-obedience-smithsville.dogsworld.com
    dog-training-smithsville.dogsworld.com

    dog-school-jonestown.dogsworld.com
    dog-obedience-jonestown.dogsworld.com
    dog-training-jonestown.dogsworld.com
Each of these subdomains will have an individual landing page relevant to its title/search terms but will all have common links to the main domain (dogsworld.com) where content is displayed

I have seen other businesses use a similar process and rank highly. What is the most efficient way to use subdomains?

Firstly, is this an acceptable method to gain search ranking for a small local business using search words as a subdomain?
Secondly, should the subdomain contain ALL the content of the main site rather than linking to the content of the main domain?

It's an interesting idea to be honest. Could be a nice case study out of this, but if you don't have a time for that, I would advise you to probably stick with the classic approach.

Either create a separate inner page for each keyword that you target. The authority of the homepage, if you did some link building (if not, then do some!), will help to move the inner pages as well.

OR, there is another option and that is to create a separate domain for every keyword. But that could be quite expensive.

Also a lot of the keywords you mentioned are either synonyms or really similar and google may "canibalize" the content. That happens of there are 2 inner pages on the same website optimized for the same keyword. Only one will show in SERPs and the second one is dead weight.
