    its use for promotion! You can also do link building buy putting some resource links on your PR.

    It's use is for publicity; not promotion... similar, but not quite the same thing.

    Do you have any real news? If not, then don't use a press release. Find more appropriate tactics. Simply listing a site and saying you want to use a press release means very little. Do something newsworthy, then use the release to let people know about it.

    The traffic would be minimal and the backlinks nearly worthless given that press releases really don't amount to much. Yeah, you might find a sympathetic editor who'll place your release on the top of the stack, but as they say, there can be only one.

    And besides, and yes I'm saying this from an end-user's perspective, how many of us pay attention to press releases anyway? If you sit down and really think about it, we hear about new Web sites mainly from word of mouth - meaning that they're getting people to talk about their Web site for them.

    If you want to learn how to use word of mouth marketing, I suggest you read "Word of Mouth Marketing - How Smart Companies Get People Talking" by Andy Sernovitz (with a foward by Seth Godin and an afterword by Guy Kawasaki).

    Dan, press releases can amount to quite a bit actually. The problem is that most webmasters don't bother learning how to use them correctly. As for the specific topic you mention - launching a new website, they're not effective for the majority, b/c the majority of new sites have no news value whatsoever. It's up to the site owner to do something newsworthy and make that release effective. And learning about PR and publicity from marketing professionals is usually the top mistake in that area people make on the Web. If you want to really learn about word-of-mouth, learn from someone with PR experience. If you want to learn about advertising, learn from ad professionals. If you want to learn about copywriting, learn from a pro in that field... pretty simple concept.

    Promotion is a component of the marketing mix. Publicity is a function of public relations. While similar and very often confused because they can occasionally share goals and certain tactics, they're not within the same discipline, and they're each pursued quite differently when done right.

    Starting free with press releases is fine. As a matter of fact, there's really no need to every pay to have a press release distributed if you're willing to put a bit of time into it. If you're not, then it's going to cost you to get your release in front of the right people. Just remember that free distribution doesn't just mean free press release distribution sites. Alone, they'll never give you the best ROI for your time, and you risk bombing the entire release. If you go the free route, at least submit manually to a few key and local outlets, and submit it to the Associated Press for possible pickup.
