Use of nameservers?

    Hello,
I thought, lets be smart and use two servers for different nameservers so when server #1 turns down (no matter for how long) server #2 will take over, but it ain't working that way. Am I doing something wrong or is this not possible?

    (Maybe another solution?)

    Regards,

Are you trying to have redundant DNS or fallover VPS system? By default the first nameserver is queried for an entry if it's down the second is queried and so on. If you wish to have a fallover VPS system then you'd need a lot more than having DNS on two different servers, you'd have to mirror the data between the VMs often, the nameservers have to be on a 3rd server, you need to check if the primary node is down if it's down switch over to the secondary node by modifying the DNS records. This is not as simple as it sounds though.

Fallover should actually be occurring automatically if both nameservers are registered with the domain registrar. Can we get the domain in question please? Really sounds like something isn't get up correctly with the domain registrar.

    The current nameservers are:
    ns1.wankenstein.net
    ns2.wankenstein.net

    Which are created at Name.com

Havent actually done this before but i guess this is how it works..

2 diffrent servers would mean 2 diffrent ips rite

so create 2 nameservers which are for first server and then 2 more for second server and use those 4 nameservers if the first server is down then the nameservers will take u to second ip i think thats how this works

Sorry, at this moment I'm trying it out with kpr0xy.com. This will be used for 28 domains.
Currently it works this way, but with 2 servers. Server one got the IP-adress of the server in the Netherlands and the other one of the server in Germany.

Long story short since 10 minutes of typing just gotten eaten by a database error:

The second wankenstein.net server isn't responding as a nameserver. Either bind (or whatever you're using) isn't running on that box or you've got port 53 blocked by the firewall.

Check on that and if it still doesn't work, I rewrite everything yet again.

    *grumble*

Does it respond now? May I know how you test it so I can figure something out without bothering you?

It's 'kinda' working now... Some get redirected by default to 2 (like me) and some to nameserver 1... Strange. :D I will buy a cPanel license soon so... :)
