Use of More on static front page

I've taken over a non-blog WordPress site. Am changing the core message on the home page. (Actually that will be temporary until I rework the whole site in Headway.)

MacUpdate.com has a nice feature where they don't show all the detailed info for a software app. They show some followed by a blue More...

Click More... and up pops more info. Click Less... and it goes away.

I'm hoping to keep the text on the home page really succinct. And use More... to satisfy those with a taste for detail. I'm a designer, not a programmer - so I had difficulty figuring out how More... is done. I hoped CSS but suspect it might be Javascript. So I have two questions:

    1. Can More... be done within static WordPress pages - by a newbie?

    2. MacUpdate may invoke More... after a given number of characters. I'd like to do it at the end of a chosen paragraph - to show additional paragraphs.

    TIA (first post)

Can I / Do I need to mark this somehow to be emailed when there's a reply?
