I imagine you should test the directory with something like trafficestimate.com to see if they indeed get much traffic. There are an awful lot of directories out there.
use wordpress for ranking high in google for whatever keyword you like, but it should be long tail. Also, use some good bookmarking, and you'll start seeing more traffic
