"Use my back" - my efforts to save some paper and help use protect nature

I wrote a lot just becoz i needed to express the importance of this. But i really need some advice in this matter, so please bear with this.

I was always baffled by the astounding amounts of paper that is literally wasted in my college everyday. Students and staff snatch out a new paper for every little task as if there is some unlimited supply of paper coming magically out of the bundle. But now what i see has gone above my tolerance levels, so i have now decided to do something about this. As it is always the case, its painfully difficult to convince people to do some little extra efforts which they skeptically consider useless. So i decided to plan out something that will require minimum of "their" efforts. We will start with saving paper by ensuring a complete utilization of paper, as in utilizing both sides.

We gotta admit, its not always the people deliberately trying to kill the mother nature by maximizing wastage. Sometimes its just so difficult to manage with things. Same is with the paper. A normal A4 sized sheet is what probably every working/studying person see everyday poured upon with gallons of ink and proving to be insanely useful in everyday work. There are a wide wide range of printers being manufactured today, every model being faster and of better quality than previous one. But they never really bother to do something about the other side of the sheet. Normally, a printer wont allow you to print on both sides of the paper and even when you decide to do it yourself, you not only have to put some extra physical efforts, but also some mental efforts to get your order of printing right, obviously wasting your precious time. So, thats the main but somehow genuine reason causing millions of paper sides go unused everyday.

Here are some calculation i made at my university. I am a computer science student about to complete my MCA first year and i have been in this IP university for 4 years now. We have a semester system and at the end of each semester, there are 3-4 practical subjects for which we have to present a file. On an average, there are about 90 - 140 sheets in a file as we are not allowed to print on both sides. So, considering 4 practicals in 1 semester, each one having on an average 120 sheets of paper, the number of sheets being used to produce the practical files of a batch with 60 students each in about 12 difference courses in about 110 colleges at a time, there are 95,04,000 sheets being used every semester only in out university. And what is dont with all that paper?? Nothing.. simply nothing. Trust me, i have presented my file many times but the external examiner never bothered to even open it once. For all other students, they barely go through 10-15 files in an examination and that too was just a formality. Actually the files are just for the records listed in the rules long ago when university was formed and is being blindly followed since then. Why they never actually open them? This is because there's just raw code written in them which is just plain stupidity coz we, computer science students, should be allowed to present our projects on a computer and not on a file and for the backup purposes, they should ask for a CD(which btw they ask for in parallel to the file). There is just no use i can see for the file but still we are required to submit one.

Anyways, after long pleadings and explanations, i finally convinced my college staff, which is very generous in such tasks, to allow us to print on both sides of the paper. But as it turns out, it was a really bad idea. My printer gave me a hard time trying to print a whole file on both sides. When i finally did so, i learned that i was amongst the very few ones to do so coz others just refused to waste their time doing those extra efforts and i do know they are somewhat valid with their excuse. Again, we have a stockpile of fresh plain sheets going into waste paper just like that. I dont know how many trees i have killed by myself.

After sometime, i did realized a way to use those fresh plain sides. What i did is discoverd the "Use My Back" box. My idea is to put those plain new one sided sheets and from any other source we can get them in this box and this box is placed near the common printer of the college. Then i will inform the staff and the administrative office about these sheets and will request them to use it wherever possible. To my surprise, they were already using the other sides of the sheets in areas where they need some rough printings. Obviously those partially used sheets cannot be used for some formal works, so i suggested some more applications like announcement papers, assignments papers, attendence sheets and most important of all, the notice board, where we actually use only one side of the sheet and pinning destroys it for any further use. We can think of more ways of reusing the paper and considering the utility of paper in out lives, we can come up with more. Also, i shall figure out to eradicate this stupid file system for out practicals.

Now all the above facts are based solely upon my intuitions and observations. I may be wrong or overlooking some potential loopholes in the plan. But i really wanna do something for the benefit of nature and i consider this my least contribution. I need more ideas and suggestions. If you can think of any, please tell me. If you liked the idea, please implement it in your own college/ workplace and post up with the results so that others can join in too. The success of this idea entirely depends on the volunteers and we need as many as we can.
