Having one main keyword in the domain is a good idea but the shorter the better.

It wouldn't harm anything, but you're not gonna get the keyword effect if you abbreviate. It's better to have the full keyword in your domain name, trust me on that. :)

Exact Match Domains (EMD's) have a very, very minor advantage since the Penguin updates.

If you have a long domain name, it looks a bit spammy if it's something like:

    AReallyLongDomainNameThatIChoose.com

    rather than

    rldntic.com

right. specially if the researcher saw your domain and it goes to a abbreviation they will think that your site is a spam. Aside from that if your domain have a keywords it will be easy for your site to crawl by google.

Well no thats not neccessarily true sebastian, but think about it this way, if you have a domain called, for example. CoolShoes.com and another called ReallyCoolShoesILike.com which one is easier to remember? Not only that, it just looks better. Depending on your situation a shorter, easy to remember domain, which is related to your main keyword is the best route in my opinion. But, in other situations, the long domain might be better if you cant find a shorter domain with the right keywords. But no, just because your domain is longer, you wont be penalized.

The best way to get recognition is doing SEO and using abbreviations for your domain will make it a bit harder to rank high because you do not have your whole keyword phrase in your domain name. However abbreviations are sometimes easier to remember so it makes it better if you are planning to promote the domain using social media.
