Usage of article directories

Hi, I was reading about article directories lately, and now I'm wondering.
Can you just submit your article you have already published on your own website again in an Article Directory? Isn't that a duplicate which means Google punish you? Won't that have a bad effect for SEO?

And how important is the authority of the publisher there. I mean, if I come there and only submit 5 of my articles, is less good than someone who submitted over hundred articles? When you look at backlinks it doesn't seem to matter to me.

I just started to learn something about SEO, and I'm wondering if you guys could help me out with this problem!

It is a matter of backlinks. If you submit 1 article but 100 bloggers rewrite it again, then you would have 100 backlinks already. The important thing is that the article you submitted is not on your website.

not bad effect, but it`s of course not so good as when you publish just unique articles on your website. Submitting already published article you just waste your time

A week ago, I would've said don't duplicate. But according to Matt Cutts - I'm not sure if it matters that much anymore. To be safe, I still write articles with unique content and post it to EZineArticles and GoArticles.
