Can you give me an example of targeting a certain US state. Let's say I only want visitors from Kansas. How would you do it? Non paid and paid type of advertising. Real visitors-people.

Online marketing methods for local targeting uses the same tactics as global/national marketing, it is just a little more specific.

Basically keyword research is important. Instead of targeting "wholesale widgets store" you would target something like "kansas wholesale widgets store" for Kansas residents that want to buy widgets. This is can be used for:

    Seo
    pay-per-click
    Press release
    articles
online ads - (I'm not sure how useful this option is)

You can also submit to industry specific directories, niche directories, etc.
A very good service to use for finding keywords is wordtracker, it is paid, but it is well worth the price.

Thats depend of your use of keywords. You need to be more specific. You need to do a keyword research to know which words or frases could do what you want.
However it is very difficult to adress targueted campaigns because Google and others search engines has local domains.
There are practices that you can use to filter the traffic for example: Bloking ips or select the state that you want.

I could set something up for you on MonkeyMeter.com. It's a road rage site for the U.S. Visitors rate there city so you could really advertise by city on the site if you want to. Just not huge traffic. I'd be willing to do something dirt cheap. Pm if you are interested.

You can use location-specific ad sites like craigslist and backpage. Make sure that all of your keywords are things like "XYZ in Kansas" and "Kansas XYZs".

If you are using Google, or Yahoo like SE you can do it, which is more reliable I guess. But if you are thinking of using sites like adbrite they will rip you.

A free advertising script called OpenAds has a feature that can show ads of your choice to certain US states visitors but you may need to buy a paid geo database from maxmind or IP2country.

    Do a keyword search.

    For example, go to www.google.com

    Type: advertising Kansas

    Search.

Substitute "Kansas" with the name of any other US state if required.

You could use Adwords to target a specific state.

Also, advertise in the local online newspapers.

Find blogs or other sites from people in those states and try to get backlinks or blog posts.

Have articles or feeds about and from the state.

I'm not from USA, so I have no idea how things are there.
Every state probably has its own local newspapers? Is a certain state also divided into regions?
Well, I need all sources for advertising: radio stations, TV stations, newspapers...
So, is there a list (website) where I could find radio stations, newspapers... for certain state?

The major cities and towns in each state often have their own newspaper.

You could use Google Adwords to advertise. Do a search in Google with the "[state] newspaper" or "[city] newspaper" and I"m sure you'll find plenty. Do the same for tv stations and radio. Yahoo also has things broken down nicely in their directory, try that.
