.us names = bad?

I saw this really good .us name on Godaddy, however, I've never purchased one before. Are there any disadvantages to a .us name compared to a .com? You know, in terms of SEO, etc.

    thanks.

I've used them with no issues, but I would recommend .com for familiarity sake if you can get a decent domain that suits your SEO or branding needs. Lots of people automatically type in .com, and I've seen lots of cases where less saavy users will mistake a website with someone elses simply because they went to the .com version.

The .us is very good if it makes a logical phrase ending in those letters; witness del.icio.us. They haven't been hurt by having a three-level sub-domain or a .us tld
I thinks SE's are pretty blind to that sort of thing.

ok, thanks. that makes me feel better. it's just that the .com for the name that I have for .us is a one-word keyword and I know that it will never be available for purchase, haha.

    Hello,
as said here if you want to create a good brand, people remember dot com, but if you want to create a couple of small sites, dont worry about us, net, org etc :=)

There aren't any problems with it - the only thing is that more people are familiar with .com or .net and if you think 'type in' visitors might be a large part of your market, either buy a domain that makes a phrase with the .us at the end (as in del.icio.us' case) or try to get a .com or .net one.

That is how I see it.

Registrants of .us domains must be United States citizens, residents, or organizations, or a foreign entity with a presence in the United States - so if you are after an investment your resale market is more limited.
