Our president and savior took out three Somali pirates yesterday, demonstrating yet again that he is bringing in a new age of diplomacy between America and foreign nations. Now the discussion as to what to do with the 4th pirate has been opened up, as well as what do do about Somalian piracy on the whole. There are many political and financial considerations to take into account, and god knows spending more money on an escalating war with Pirates could go over like a fart in church. Whatever our messiah does, it should be economically efficient. In that spirit, I've come up with an idea that seems to make a whole lot of sense. We need to return the 4th pirate to Somalia. Additionally, we should offer every inmate in our federal and state prison systems the option of permanent deportation to Somalia in lieu of serving out the remainder of their sentence, regardless of the charge. Each inmate opting for Somalia would be given an assault rifle (God knows we have thousands of confiscated AKs and aging M16s) and dropped off at a point of entry in Somalia. Of course there would be an initial investment building fencing and guard posts along the Somali boarder, but the millions of dollars we would save feeding, educating, and guarding those prisoners would quickly make up for that. Furthermore, the U.S. government could charge a security toll to all boats wishing to sail along the Gulf of Aden/Coast of Somalia to help pay for the naval blockade that would serve as prison guards to Somalia's coast lines. Any individual or watercraft caught leaving Somalia's coast line would be destroyed on sight. What do you think? Australia had a similar start and look how well it turned out!
Australia started nothing like that. We, just like the USA, had English convicts sent here to try & build a great country. Well we succeeded The English first sent their convicts to the USA, then to Africa, then finally Australia. Funny how we Aussies are PROUD of our convict history but America is embarrassed by theirs. So much so, it often gets swept under the carpet. Now your other ideas are wrong on every level, first you need to own Somalia in order to send your people there.
Well, this is a pleasant derail but I'll bite. America started as an English prison Colony? Would you mind citing some source for that information? Regarding clearing with Somalian customs prior to sending our criminals there, that simply is not possible since the people who claim to govern Somalia are not IN Somalia, and therefore completely irrelevant. Since nobody is in charge, I'm quite sure we can get someone in Somalia to sign off on the whole thing and that is as good as it needs to be =).

From your links: I don't mean to nit pick, but I'd say that qualifies as a slight difference between the settlement of America and the settlement of Australia. I do, however appreciate the information. I was unaware the UK had so many prisoners they were busy littering them in every other colony they had around the planet for use as labor. In either event, and back on topic, lets say the US was predominantly settled by criminals from the UK's penal system. Another glowing example of how my plan for Somalia could be just the right thing to turn that country around! Glad to see you providing evidence to back my plan!
Ha, I chuckled at that one thanks. Note you had 160 years worth and we only had 80. The Dutch actually settled Tasmania here in the 1600s, well before the 'penal colony' began, but we do much prefer the 'convict' beginnings story. Bad guys aint really so bad and many of their crimes would be laughed at today. But, back on topic, it didn't really back you up much as England still already owned America at the time and claimed Australia as well. You still haven't really gotten around that problem effectively Plus, England sent 'soldiers' to rule over the convicts, it didn't arm their prisoners to keep the convicts in check. Plus, as in any country, there's only a few bad apples. How do you discern the good from the bad? Wouldn't the armed US prisoners shoot them all? I'm sorry, I still can't buy your plan!
Yes, it sounded like you got lots of "political" prisoners, not the hardened criminals that would make the story better. Anyhow, my plan was not to keep the convicts in check. The convicts who chose to go to Somalia over continued imprisonment would likely be the most desperate, the lifers. Giving them an automatic weapon and a supply of ammo is really allowing them to protect themselves from the current denizens of Somalia. I have no doubt that even our criminals have a much better average level of education than the locals in Somalia, and it wouldn't be long before they had that place turned around. Did I mention that the majority of our prison population voted Obama!!??
