The best option for you to avail is XOOM service.
Xoom converts your USD in INR and transfers in to your bank account. For this XOOM takes max of 10 days and often much faster and takes $8 as service charge which is very low indeed.

If you get your money through XOOM then there will be no need for your bank charges.
If you require furthur more help please feel free to contact me

The main problem with US $ cheque is you have to pay more fees for its clearing and more over that you have to wait around 25 to 30 days to get clear of that in any bank. I know because once i got a cheque of US $20 and for that i got credit of around 600 INR in my icici account after 27 days.:(

Don't think so that any bank can do this with low rate and clear your check in less days as its lengthy process to send US$ check for clearing for them as i heard.

Is it fixed ? I have heard that the bank charges in some % of the final amount payable. Say for example 5.5% for first 10,000 then 5% for the next few thousand & likewise. I am not sure if this is fixed or not. May be the rates you have posted are their minimum fees.
