The US is "aware" of torture taking place in Iraqi prisons, according to the outgoing Maltese UN human rights chief in Iraq.

"Yes, torture is happening now, mainly in illegal detention places. Such centres are mostly being run by militia that have been absorbed by the police force," says John Pace, who retired last week as human rights chief for the UN assistance mission in Iraq.

In a frank interview with The Times, Dr Pace says photos and forensic records have proved that torture was rife inside detention centres. Though the process of release has been speeded up, there are an estimated 23,000 people in detention, of whom 80 to 90 per cent are innocent.

He says the Baghdad morgue received 1,100 bodies in July alone, about 900 of whom bore evidence of torture or summary execution. That continued throughout the year and last December there were 780 bodies, including 400 having gunshot wounds or wounds as those caused by electric drills.

Dr Pace expresses deep concern over the progress of the Saddam Hussein trial, saying he would have preferred to see the former dictator tried internationally.

After two years serving in Iraq, Dr Pace says that the non-existence of law and order has left society without any protection, clearly reflecting that the US invasion was not properly planned.

Also, here's a video (it's not new but i just saw it for the first time) of our genious soldiers first shooting, then running over a mans Taxi with a tank (and laughing) for looting some wood.

Wow. Torture in a war zone. Who would have ever thought such a thing would exist.

I would hope that the entire world was aware of such a thing. There's some video, from 2 years ago, showing UK soldiers doing stuff they should not be against Iraqis.

It's war. That's why the quicker we tidy things up and move along the better.

Since when does war give people the right to torture others? Bush gets on tv and says "WE DO NOT TORTURE" yet yoyo posts an article saying the US is "aware" of the torture?

Isn't permitting torture when you have the power to stop it the same as torturing people yourself? Please don't tell me you support Abu Ghraib.

By the way, Rumsfeld has said this war may go on twelve years. Doesn't sound like we'll be finishing it anytime soon.

torture is the worst part of war, their are so many methods that you can get tortured, It would suck if they did something to your private parts :(. War=Unfair play. No War= Peace. If it does not affect my life= i dont care :).

Hmm... ok some foreign country throws up an article on a foreign website about some foreign "Dr Pace" guy saying such and such is fact without offering any proof... that 900 Iraqi's were tortured to death or executed by American soldiers in just one month...

Yea, that's real believable. Where do you come up with this shit? Do you sit around all day doing Google searches for "Evil America", "Conspiracy", etc. just to see what comes up so you have something to post on DP? Did you find that link off the al jazeera website?

You need to stop adding words to my statements. Read it over again. I don't see the word "right" in there anywhere. I don't see anything that says it is ok to torture either.

I never said that you said that. I only said you were implying it. You make it sound as if it is ok. I'm only saying that I feel it isn't ok.

    Fine. I don't imply anything.

If you look at any war in history, there was torture, to some extent, involved. Why anyone would think this event would be any different is beyond me.

While the USA does not condone torture, it's impossible to control everyone. Just look at our own neighborhoods. What do you think would happen in a foreign land with heavy weaponry?

It's from Malta, a part of the EU in southern Europe. Unless you can find some evidence they are biased or against the US, there's no reason to dismiss it as not credible.

Actually, their quoting one guy as a source - with no evidence. I don't think any respectable US newspaper would print such a thing from a guy nobody knows without any evidence. That's no different that tesla saying there are UFO's... you just gonna believe him because he has no reason to lie?

<note - I'm not quoting tesla, simply using that as an example>

As stated in the article, the guy was (until he just quit) the "UN human rights chief in Iraq" , I think that makes him more than "just some guy"

    Read The history.

This is no different than what has been done in Chile, Vietnam, Argentine, Bolivia, Nicarague,.....

Teach the local soldiers the Art of torture, organize the death squads, have couple of CIA agents in charge and then claim it is the local government that is doing this and has nothing to do with American military. ;)
