URLs with hyphens

    Hi all..

Thinking of starting a new website in the UK.

Some NUMPTY in New York has bought the URL I want (I call him a numpty because its clearly out of greed as the URL directs to a "not found" page).

Anyways, my other option is the URL with hyphen separating the words - which is available and the next best thing.

Will the hyphenated URL have negative or positive SEO / SEM effects?

    Thanks

All my URLs have 1 or 2 hyphens, it wont have positive neither negative effect on your rankings/SEO/SEM.
Issue could be only if the other guy have registered a trade mark with this domain. If that is the case he would be able to sue you and acquire your domain due to trade mark violations.
However, I doubt it since you said that there is no site at all...

I think it will be alright.
I have one domain, which only difference with another one is a hyphen between two words. The other domain was almost empty and not really related, it has also been dropped several days ago...
