To give you an idea of what kind of urls google prefers, go take a look at blogspot - which google owns. The way those urls work - blogspot.com/2009/05/name-of-blog-post-here.html

That is the domain - the date - article title with keywords.html. But then again, in the google webmaster guidelines it says not to rewrite URLs. With my self hosted wordpress blog, I copied the blogspot URL structure and it seems to work pretty good.

I can not say that is "the" way that google likes to see URLs. But there is a reason why the engineers at google and blogspot made those URLs appear like that. When blogspot was being designed, surely a group of people sat down and talked about everything, including how the URLs looked. That was the format that was agreed on. And it was agreed on for a reason. Just why, I do not know.

    I dont know because...

    I have Sef urls
    I have none Sef urls
I have wordpress blogs with blahblah.com/category/postname

And the variation across my sites in rankings tells me nothing :) because theres so many other reasons for pages/sites of mine ranking or not.

Obviously, the SEO friendly urls as @~kev~ has suggested, seems to get more attention from googleBOT.

But there is a caution, as heard from a guru that, there should be not many forward slashes / in the URL, for example http://www.blahblah.com/as/dsd/fdfd/assa/sas/sasa/sasa.html.

Sometime I saw that a website rank on top that have keywords as query-string parameters for example http://www.example.com/my-main-keyword.aspx?a=keyword_variation1&b=keyword_variation2.

So conclusion is that google-Indexer give plus point if you have keywords in your URL, regardless of its structure.

The best URL structure for SEO is like what kev said. You may consider use /category-name/postname.html either. However, it is a little hard to keep balance. You need URl structure that both seo friendly while not too much long. Google seems like friendly structure but does not like the very long url.

    Example

    http://www.domain.com/category/post-name.html

    http://www.domain.com/long-category-name/very-very-very-long-post-name-because-of-title.html

    Code (markup):
