I use bit.ly a lot, for two reasons. You can track the clicks on your links, as well as create customized/vanity links if they're available. I've found them to be nothing but totally reliable so far in many months of use.
why not buy a domain from godaddy.com.You can get one under a buck.Buy a .info domain for $.89 cents i believe.
bit.ly & ow.ly however regarding captcha and mobile number... when you request a friend does it ask for a captcha? If so, there is a link below it asking you to verify your account via email; very quick, easy & mo more captcha!
you may install the URL shortening script in your server if you want. You may then use across all the sites you own...
Google made a plugin for Chrome to shorten URLS with one click I think is called goo.gl or something like that, I use it all the time...
