Hi, My website is ranking for a keyword on 2nd page of google. Recently i have just done some on-page optimization changes to strengthen my main keywords throughout the title, description, web page...etc. Now I also want to include my keyword in the URL. Currently the URL which is on the second page is like this.. www.sitename.com/top (top is a name of my subdirectory) i want to rename that directory name to www.sitename.com/"mypreferredkeyword" But since the first URL is already indexed and is on the second page and if i change it to the above one....my first URL will show an error message. So my question is if i rename the subdirectory name to include the keyword.....will it be picked up by google..or what. Or will google treat the first url www.sitename/top as a different URL (and of course show an error page as there will not be any page like that if i rename it) than www.sitename/mykeyword I am very confused on this part........please suggest me shall i go ahead with this change or not? Thanks
Well.. Base on my brain.. Renaming a "folder" creates new file.. I think, what you are doing is create a new folder with a different name but the same contents. If i am right, then it will result to duplicate content for sometime until google indexes or knows that it is the same contents from same source.. But when will google know that those are the same contents and should not be penalized? I don't know. [ Purely.. Wild guess with concrete ideas.. please don't flame me ]
Why not setup a redirect? All the content goes on the new address, and the old address points to the new one with 301 redirect
Thanks guys.......yeah it is a folder .......sorry i mentioned url rewriting at the title... I was thinking of that...but if i redirect this page to a let's suppose new form page or folder, will this page which is already ranked on the 2nd page of google affect..in its ranking position... I mean do google punish pages which redirects permanently to a new form page and can google show the new form page instead of this old one after some time....
