URL Redirects

    Hello all.
I have a question about url redirects.
I'm not sure if I did this right or not.

I just bought a domain name and put it on my server.
I then put a 301 redirect on the url file to another one of my
    existing web sites.

the new url file on my server does not have an index page.
It is strictly for the redirect purpose.

When I type it into the address bar, (www.new domain url.com) it redirects to my existing site just fine.
when I type the new domain url into the google search engine, the site doesn't come up
but it states that it is page 1 of 40,000 for (www.new domain url .com)
Not sure how this could be but anyway,
I wanted this to be instantaneous, like in the address bar.

Is there something else that I should be doing?

    Thanks for any feedback.
    EJ

Is your domain new and have not been used before? I'm guessing if Google's returning indexed results of that domain then that has been used or has a previous owner. You may check the domain's history by checking it out at some internet web archive.

If you are re-directing this URL to another site, then it's not going to really get indexed because a 301 re-direct is saying my site has moved permanantly to the other site.

If anything when you type your new URL into Google, the site which it is re-directing to should come up in the listings.

    Thank you for the reply.
I have created an index to the new site just for the sake of having one.

I also submitted the new url to google.

I assume it should only take a day or two for google to see it?
