Having your keyword in the url does have a positive effect on ranking (more in MSN then in the other 2 main SE's) but also it is in incentive for a person to click on your SE listing instead of the others if you have the keyword they looked for in your url.

I have recently concluded an experiment on the subject and the answer is in summary:

    • Google indexes on keywords in hyphenated urls but not on keywords in underscored or conjoined urls.
    • Yahoo indexes on keywords in hyphenated and underscored urls but not keywords in conjoined urls.
    • MSN indexes on some keywords in hyphenated, underscored and conjoined urls but the exact circumstances in which it does so are at the moment unclear.
You can read the detailed blog entries here keywords in urls and here URLs (Update).

If just want the advice :)

    • Keep the urls short.
    • Put important pages in the root directory (immediately after the first slash).
    • Incorporate your keywords in the urls.
    • Use hyphens to separate keywords, never an underscore or space.

There is so much wrong with that article it is difficult to imagine how the author manages to tie his own shoe laces.

Thanks for article you provided me with, its pretty detailed:).As for the article i listed a link for, i was missled by the diagram it provided, because i think better when i am given graphs, however the discussion was very brief. any way im not here to discuss how people write but im interested in the truthfulness of that first article, is it credible and of any use to me or should i just ignore it?
    thanks again!
