Newbie here so bear with me. I recently took over a website and the business has changed names adding a geo locator to our name. The current site was created in Wordpress and although I have been able pretty easily to modify and make changes to the current site, we would like to change the URL and build a new site from scratch. Someone warned me that I would lose all of our google ranking for seo by creating new site under the new URL. Is there validity to this warning? Is there a plug in in word press that can solve this? Should I just stick with modifying the website that's already in place? I am a marketer not a developer so I like the idea of building from scratch and testing usability before implementing. Please advise
Check out this article: http://www.searchenginejournal.com/how-to-avoid-seo-disaster-during-a-website-redesign/42824/ This article focuses on redesigning a website with the same URL, but the part about redirects has value to you. 301 redirects can transfer the power of your old URL's to your new one.
Hi Jenjenv, welcome to Digital Point! First let me ask for some clarification, are you talking about moving the site to a new domain or just changing the linking/naming scheme of your pages and posts?
