Because with a-zthailand.com, you have two potential keywords in the URL: "a" and "zthailand". I don't think ,many people will search for "zthailand", do you?

With a-z-thailand.com, on the other hand, you have three potential keywords: "a", "z", and "thailand". I'm not sure how many people will use the first two but I suspect you'll get a few at least for "thailand".

I tend to agree with minstrel. However i have recently been leaning away from the hyphens (instead of a-z-thailand.com do azthailand.com).

The reason i say this is because google seems to be able to pull the words out on their own. Google knows that azthailand is not a word but that thailand is a word.

Lemme give you an example: One of my sites, dealeron.com sells auto dealer websites. If you do a google search for "auto dealer website" (without quotes) we come up number one. The interesting part is that on the SERP page you will see the word "dealer" made bold throughout the page including the my site's URL which looks like this: dealeron.com

The fact that google bolds the "dealer" part of the URL implies to me that they know which parts of a URL are "real" words. Which means that the hyphen may not be necessary.

Shoot, I wouldn't even worry about the root domain, look at the 'backend' of the URL. That should be changed via .htaccess. Make that a nice looking URL. Example:

    http:// www. a-zthailand.com/dictionary/author-silom-patpong.htm

I thought the same as you at one time, BILZ. However, there's a flaw in that reasoning.

All the evidence points to Google ignoring the meta description tag for ranking purposes. However, when you type in a search query, Google will highlight terms in the query wherever it can find them on the page -- for example, it will pull up and highlight parts of the description as a snippet including portions of words and portions of URLs. Does that necessarily mean that those highlighted portions are used in ranking the page for those search terms?

Exactly. For example if you have a page:
    exampleonline.html

and they search for example, Google usually shows:
    exampleonline.html
    with the example bolded.

That's just my opinion which I usually notice when searching on Google.

    cphosts:

    (1) the underscore is definitely not the best choice - that's no longer in question - dashes are word separators; unserscores are not

    (2) see my post just before yours: just because it's bolded doesn't mean it's involved in ranking

I found all of your information very useful and also show that Google SEO is very complex and i guess very difficult to know whats really going on.

Regarding .htaccess. i am sorry i do not know how to do it my Thai webmaster has a problem with is as well. It is nothing they teach here.

But i agree that the domain should be cleaner
