Urgent Help - 404 error page redirect

    Hi,
    I have lots 404 of error pages. I have added some redirect in my .htaccess file like
    Redirect /directory http://newsite.com/directory

    but found that there are some more pages fo rwhich I can't use the same method.
    I want to redirect all my 404 pagese to my home page. for that I am trying to use
    ErrorDocument 404 /
    But it is not working.

    Please provide me any solution assuming that I am not expert of Apache server.
