Hello, We did a 301 redirect to sh3bwah.com to become sh3bwah.maktoob.com for all subdomains as well. As soos as the redirect was done we had a big drop in traffic from Search Engines. Can anybody help with any tip or advice please? There's another problem as well, the site has thousands of backlinks, but now they all link to the old site, and it's very hard to contact them all to ask them to replace the old url with the new one. Any advice? The site is on the same server, and nothing has changed except the url. Please can you advice on this urgently? Thanks in advance
It will take search engines about a week or two to start recognizing the 301 redirect. Until that time, the old URL will keep showing up in search results. Also, you wont see the PR move over because Google does not appear to be updating PR anymore (at least not at the moment). As for the backlinks, that is the unfortunate part about 301'ing a big site. There's really nothing you can do beyond contacting each one individually and asking them to change the link, although a huge percentage of them might not do it, or won't respond, etc. I've gone through this with a company site before.
For starters, create a good "404 Not Found" page that links back to the home page, and other important pages. Go into your social bookmarking accounts and update all of the links that your site previously had. Overall, this is something that will be a long and gradual process. You might also want to consider a listing on business.com or dir.yahoo, pointing to your new site...anything to give the new URL more importance.
when we did a massive 301 redirect on every page of my site, our traffic and SERP dropped tremendously for the first two weeks. SEs take some time to reindex you and you should be back to where you were when you first started. There is really no need to go back and get all those backlinks changed. If you are still experiencing huge differences in SERP ranking and traffic, i would suggest you look over your 301 redirects to make sure everything is redirecting properly.
