Upgrading Ram-Can I go for any DDR 2 Ram?

    Hi,
This is my first post here in this forum. I'm a bit new when it comes to "hardware". I'm planning to upgrade my RAM for my Acer Aspire 5710 laptop.

    Currently I have a DDR2(PC2-5300) (1GB) Ram . I'm planning to replace it with 2 2GB RAMs.

I'm a bit concerned about the bus frequency and I'm wondering if I can go for "any" DDR 2 Ram which is of a different frequency (PC6400 800Mhz)?? Would my system support that? (Or is that even a factor to consider?)

    Thanks

Hmmm.. . usually there's another slot for another stick of RAM in most newer laptops. So I think getting another one is Ok.

As for getting another one with a different frequency. That is always discouraged. It is even better if you get another one with the same brand, as well as frequency too.

I have tried putting on RAM with different frequencies, but that was on a desktop. Machine ran fine. The only thing is that the stick with the slower memory had to be inserted on the first slot, otherwise it didn't get detected at all. Also I think your system has to adjust with the differing frequency, and slower one is taken.

heyy, thanks for your reply. Im going to replace the existing RAM in my laptop with two new ones (2 GB*2). I was wondering if I should for a RAM which is of the same frequency as the old one? Can I go for something higher?

You need to look at your laptop specifications. If let say your laptop is designed to support RAM speed of up to 667MHz, most likely you can use the 800MHz module, but it will clock down the speed to 667MHz.

hey, Yeah I tried to look at my specs, but cant really find the speed it can support. Do you know of any tool which can do the same?

Go to http://www.crucial.com/ and use the Crucial Memory Advisor tool. :)

No put the RAM of same frequency..PC-2 in laptop means it's a DDR-2 RAM. Using different speed of RAM can cause serious problems..
