Upgraded last blog to 2.6 Theme will not display. Suggestions?

I finally got around to upgrading my last blog to word press 2.6.
I though I would commemorated the occasion with a new theme (2.6 compatible).

Now it won't display. I can get the default theme to work, but now my new one.
I just get a white screen, or just the theme background, and nothing else.

I am hoping that someone has had this problem by now, and has a fix or a reason.
    Can anyone help?

    Thanks in advance.

(Yes! I have redownloaded, and reinstalled both the theme and wordpress, with the same result.)

it means the theme you chose is not compatible with the latest version of WordPress.

    You have 3 options:
    1) contact the theme designer and ask if he/she can please update the theme for you.
    2) find another theme
    3) Hire someone to fix the theme for you.

    good luck!

The theme was designed after the 2.6 release.
I made sure to purchase one that was recent.

Disable all of your plugins and see if it works then, and then go one by one re-enabling them and see if there is a conflict between one of the plugins and the theme. I agree with arwen54 though, it is likely the theme hasn't been upgraded for 2.6. Being desinged after 2.6 is different than being designed for 2.6. And since you bought the theme, see what the terms are for upgrades and support for it. Good luck.

Same thing happened to me. There are many possible causes, but try the following:

    1. restore the index.php file from your backup into the root of your FTP; turns out mine was blanked out in the upgrade to 2.6. I'm guessing due to a permissions conflict. Once I restored index.php from a working copy the site came up.

    2. clear your browser cookies, close and reopen the browser and see if it works. I'd read that this worked for others, but it didn't work for me.

    3. see if you can log in to the admin tool by going to http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin. It may work to get you logged in if the main page is blank. Then you could try changing your theme from within admin.

Thanks. I will try all of that.

Just so the rest of you know the theme is made for 2.6. Support is usually good, I have sent an email. Just hoping to get a few ideas that maybe I didn't think of.

I have no problem getting around the admin area, or with the default theme, but there is something that is not complete.

I have seen where some themes would not display properly without certain plugins activated that are hard-coded into the theme but never a complete blank... But maybe it could be a plugin issue?

One thing to check is to make sure you try it in all browsers. I use mostly IE7 and i installed a theme last year and I set it all up and it looked great. I had a friend email me and ask me why I put up an ugly theme. I checked it in FF and sure enough it was not working right. That may not be your problem but I would double check to make sure.

Yes, I have a few themes like that, but this isn't one of them. the default theme works fine, but other themes including the one I just purchased do not.

It doesn't work in any browsers. I am thinking it is a wordpress issue. Problem with all files being installed completely.
I always assumed that wordpress wouldn't work at all if there was some code, or files corrupt.

I agree that it's a Wordpress issue. The blank page problem has been widely reported in upgrades to 2.5 - 2.6. In my case, I ended up having to restore my files and database from backups to get it working again, and then I tried the upgrade again the following week and it worked.

That time, I did the following and it worked:

    1. full backups of everything again
    2. set the blog to the default theme before doing the upgrade
    3. disabled ALL plugins
    4. logged out of the admin screen (log out as opposed to just closing the page)
    5. cleared my browser cookies
    6. didn't use any auto-upgrade plugins. I did the upgrade manually according to WP's extended upgrade instructions here.

I should add that after my first attempted upgrade, the one that didn't work, I screwed up my files trying to get the blank screen to go away, and then only after I'd changed too many files did I notice that the index.php file in the root directory was empty. I believe that if I'd noticed that sooner and replaced just that one file from backup, everything would have worked and wouldn't have required a full restore of everything from backup.

I have done every suggestion, including completely deleting all wordpress files from the root, and re-installing a new download of 2.6, and I still keep getting the same errors.
I can log into the admin panel and perform operations, yet it loads slow on the default template, and any custom templates will not load at all.

When you deleted all WP files, did you roll back to your previous version of WP before restoring your database backup?

It's possible that the initial failure to upgrade to WP 2.6 damaged files and/or the database in such a way that a simple re-attempt of the upgrade to 2.6 may not be sufficient to fix it.

What I did after my initial failed attempt was revert to my previous version of WP, which had been 2.5. I restored the 2.5 WP files through FTP and my latest 2.5 database from my web host's CPanel (at godaddy). That got the site working the way it had been before the upgrade.

Then, I followed the steps I described above to do the upgrade to 2.6 again.

Do you have full backups of your database as well as your files from before the attempted upgrade to 2.6? If not, your host may have them. I know in godaddy's case they perform nightly backups above and beyond any that I do myself.

I will give it a shot, thanks. I tried to upgrade this blog before and it was a disaster, (2.5), so I left it at 2.1.
This is the first upgrade that I have done since the last failure.

I have 5 other blogs that upgrade just fine, and are functioning properly.
Now this is my oldest blog, and there are a few things attached to the root that I forgot about.

I have just recently deleted all of those old files and scripts and reinstalled to see if that was the problem.
One that I know of would inhibit the header, so I am hoping that it was the main problem the whole time.

Reinstalling now, I'll keep you posted,
    Thanks for your help.

O.K., now I am getting irritated. I have completely deleted everything on the root. Downloaded a fresh version of 2.6, and the necessary host/server files.

I have reinstalled not only a new download of wordpress, but also of the theme, and it is behaving the exact same way as before.
    No changes.

Wordpress is not functioning smoothly, and only the default themes work.

No plug ins, No custom installs, No fancy tricks.
Just a plain, raw, manual install from scratch, and it is still functioning the same.

Does anyone have any other suggestions ? What else is there to do, I have completely started from scratch ?

Why not roll back to a previous version of WP just to see if you can get things working the way they were?

First, can you doublecheck the contents of your index.php, and some of your other WP files in the root directory just to make sure they all have content, particularly index.php? Is .htaccess the same as it was before the upgrade? It won't/shouldn't change with the upgrade.

Also, WP 2.6 requires a new secret key to be added into wp-config.php. Check out this article and then check your wp-config.php file.

I checked each individual file , yes there is code in them and the file sizes match the down, loaded files. I have entered the secret key. I even redid the config.php file a few times. htaccess is the same.

I don't know why I am having such a hard time with just this blog. All the others are fine.

Now I am getting this error message :

Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /usr/www/virtual/eborg9/www.124bpms.com/wp-includes/post.php on line 1966

I think it's the fault of a WP bug. Too many people have been experiencing the same symptom with the blank page after upgrade for it to be anything else. If nothing else, WP could/should have remarked upon the issue in the release notes with preventative suggestions.

I am thinking the same thing as well. I see a lot of posts in the WP forum about it, but never a solution.

That is why I hate upgrading, because it's a crap shoot. I have 3 blogs working fine, but as expected, the one with the most traffic, and revenue will not cooperate.

Got the theme author assisting me. I commend his customer service, I only hope that he will see the problem and get it up and running for me.

I also scoured WP Support and no concrete solution to any question with the same problem...strange.

I'll keep you all posted. Thanks for your help so far.

Good luck, hmansfield. If you find a solution and post it here, I'm sure it would greatly help a lot of people having the same problem with WP 2.6.
