Updating sites regularly is a 'MUST' for every kind of site for SEO?

Am planning to make a review webpage to sell my affiliate product. Is it a MUST for every websites and webpages to be updated regularly so that SEO crawler choose our website to index? If that is the case, how'll I update a page that is just a review page of affiliate product?

We are all taught that content is king etc and fresh content good etc. Take a look at the web, it is filled with old content and sites that are seldom updated.

I'm interested in this topic as well. I'm thinking that you don't really need to update your content very often just make sure you have awesome keywords and are directing traffic to your sites. Just my 2 cents!

I think it depends on your competition.
If the competitions sites are not updated often then there will not be a problem because you are no worse than them freshness wise.

I have a site that has had very little changes for about a year or more and has great rankings,
but the competition does pretty much the same.

I understand that. But if it is a website which is publishing everyday's news, I can update it regularly. But what will I update with a website that is just to sell my affiliate product and nothing to do with updates?

You could create new pages promoting other similar products.
Or you could create more pages with useful articles related to your affiliate product.

For example you set up a web page to promote fatloss4idiots. the homepage could be you main review, then on inner pages have articles like "ten things not to eat on a diet" and mention the product again somewhere on the page :)

Yes I agree, keep trying to write new articles on the same theme - it will help you develop more longtail searches and keep your site "fresh"

I think some search engines care more about freshness than others, like MSN Live for example.

I don't think it's a "must" to keep updating the site - you don't really need to get it indexed often. I would focus more on getting quality backlinks, and maybe make an update every great once in a while. Most affiliate sites don't really depend on repeat traffic, so your users won't exactly be expecting anything new.

One of my client's site (holiday/travel) is updated two times a year an I never found a problem with that from the SEO point of view. To my observation Google knows to distinguish perfectly depending on the type of site if it should be updated regulary or not, to keep rankings.

I have to argue that fresh content is very key. Often, the sites with old content have the age advantage. They have existed forever which gives them the upper hand on credibility from Googles point of view.

Does fresh content also help get your site visted more often by Mr. Googlebot?

During the first six months of your site being up it's a good idea to update it at least once a week. Then after you develop page rank you can scale way back, but you do need to watch your competition to stay ahead of them. If they're updating several times a day you're going to have a hard time competing with them if you rarely update.

Have a link somewhere on your review site that says "articles" and throw articles, other reviews, or news related items about your niche there. Make sure you have nice images and links to the product you're promoting on every page with something like 'featured" or "recommended" to draw people's attention to it. Over time your articles pages should convert nicely and may even out perform your main review page over time depending on the niche.

Continually updating your site is a very good idea! You can create new content with new long tailed keywords or even branch off to another keyword to keep your site growing and traffic coming in.

I agree with pbruessow. Adding new articles to your site can help you to dominate other long tail. My experience is that if you have made your site a trusted site. It is not difficult for you to dominate other related long tail by adding new articles.

It really depends upon your competitor as well.

If your competitors sites are hardly updated then you don't need to update your site on a regular basis. Example many of the corporate sites don't update their sites often.

Also some niches require you to update your site more often. A mobile phone review site needs regular update where as a Breast cancer info site may not need an update.

In short, look what your competition is doing.
