I run a store website, and my frontpage is static, i update this by hand, whenever i have new products, maybe on a weekly basis. I have a competitor who runs a script to dynamically change their pages everytime the page is loaded. So, does google rank a site(page) higher if it is deemed to have fresher content? I know there are other factors obviously, but what i am getting at is does the frequency of updating matter in terms of the serps?
Google just caches his page more often then yours because they see that they are updating their website more often. And yes that means better SERPs
so for example i could rotate my content around and that means it has been updated (in googles eyes)?? Or is google clever and knows that nothing new is added its just been moved around? I am not sure if their site is cached more tbh i havent looked into that. My site is cached quite frequently though. ....actually i have the date on my site (so does he), which obviously changes, so i guess it does change every day.
Google will know. After they scouring the page and compared to other pages content then they will know there is nothing new.
Fresh content and new content to me means new article posted or new product review posted, So Google is quite smart so they know exactly what is new and old.>>my opinion
the answer is no. Just because you update your content it does not automatically give you serps. Google may index your site more frequently, but indexing does not = ranking, they are totally different.
If keyword is not competitive then it's right. But in competitive keywords you have to do both backlink and quality content updated on regular basis. If your competitor do but you don't then your ranking will go stale again.
thanks for the reply guys Is that not just wishful thinking? "i am a hard working webmaster and i should be placed above sites where they are lazy and dont update".?? I'm not saying it isnt or shouldnt be true, i know of a site in my category who's entire site hasnt been updated since i started checking out my competition more than a year ago...they have started slipping down the serps now. I have a google sitemap, in all honesty it is not updated very much. It does get downloaded all the time in my google webmaster tools, but like i say it isnt updated much.
ofcourse update is one of the factors to consider your SERPs. it's not only good for SERP but also for visitors. who would go to the page that got nothing new at all.
