Update: Success transfering away from three popular registrars!

    Hi,

I now have real-world experience with transferring away from three 'popular' registrars. All three went very well, with no need to bother with faxing legal forms, getting notarized, or extra fees.

Note: All domains must be at least 6 months old prior to transfer.

1and1: 6 domains transfered away. No problem at all, despite their 'shaky' reputation.

Ipowerweb.com: 2 domains transfered away, much easier than expected.
Beware, this is about same owner (me), and new registrar (Godaddy). Ipowerweb does not appear to have free pushes between accounts.

Siteground.com: ('Free' domain) 1 'free' domain transfered with only the need to deal with their customer service once. They had my name on the Whois, but themselves as the only e-mail contact(s). Domain successfully transfered.

I still need to confirm being able transfer two 'free' domains from Netfirms, later this month. They are Icann certified, so it should go well. Has anyone here transfered free domains away from Netfirms before?

    MGH

No, but I am tracking your progress here so keep us posted. I've got a couple myself that I want to move.

Who told you that ? AFAIK, you cant transfer a domain away within the first 60 days for reg. and the last 15 days before expiry.

I don't have time to prove it at this moment, but I'm pretty sure registrar transfers are only allowed after 6 months.

"Free pushes" between accounts (same registrar) are much easier, but sometimes limited to one/30 days. If I'm wrong, I need to know, so please give some more details.

    Edit:
Oops, I thought it was 6 months, but now I'm ready to believe 60 days.
    Thanks.

Chances are the OP is only giving the 6-month thing as an allowance for being
able to transfer your domain name to another registrar. That's reasonable.

MGH, you should be able to transfer out your domain names from netfirms. But
try to be aware of all their policies on such so you won't have any unexpected
    surprises.

The 60 and 15 days limit as above is imposed by ICANN...so its a norm I think ;)

Transfer away from Netfirms is complete, no hassle or costs. :)
    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Note: 1and1 was very easy for domains I paid for, but they have rejected transfer of two 'free' .info domains, from this summers' promotion. :( Their bad reputation is earned when it come to slow customer service, so I'm waiting, and waiting, for a reply as to why the transfer is blocked.

Has anyone ever transfered a 'free' .info away from 1and1?
