And also I expect them to decrease the value of site-wide links , they will surprise us this time , we'll feel like someone hit from the nose :)

I wouldn't be surprised if they decrease the value of sitewide links, but I would be surprised if a link on one page is generally worth more than a sitewide link from the same site.

There is still a hierarchy of linking, and in general, sitewide links tend to point to 'more important' sites relevant to the big theme, while the individual scattered links tend to point to specific pages more relevant to a more defined topic (long tail).

Yea, and pretty soon they are going to stop giving much weight to the keyword tag and take action against keyword stuffers and cloakers. By the way, do you think George Bush is going to be able to beat Al Gore in 2000?

Not if your main focus is building a quality site for readers rather than search engines (which Google actually encourages). If a reader wants to know what you refer, it's a benefit when those links are easy to find on every page, instead of having to dig through things or get to some ridiculous "links" page.

You need a balanced link profile. Google is subject to change without notice.

Google Algorithm is a mystery. But as one thing always matter, quality backlinks from authority sites. It is not the number of links you have but the quality of the links. High PR, age of domain etc all count.

I agree with you in regards to relevant blog rolls and the like - it is sitewides on directories and the like that are more harm than hindrance IMO

    Amen to that :)

More harm to what? More harm to your sites getting outranked? If the site on the footer link is a quality site, who is it that its exactly harming?

It is "above the radar" SEO - "might" not hinder - but I very much doubt it "helps"

And if your linking strategy is based on nothing but SEO, then that's the real problem with a site.

You may wish all you want.

I prefer to play in the real world and make my own luck, rather than rely on "wishful thinking"
