Up.. down.. up.. down..

Hopefully you guys can give me a bit of advice. Most of the below relates to google.co.uk, rather than .com.

We've had some successful SEO campaigns in the past, which taught me the basics - but were all for fairly low competition terms.. terms which were, however, useful to the businesses that wanted to rank for them. When it comes to our own company website, however, I feel like I'm learning all over again. The site is http://hswebexpress.com.

We launched it in July 2007, so I don't know how much of what we are experiencing is to do with the age of the site. When we launched, we didn't seem to get "sandboxed" - we started ranking for various terms quite quickly, although not very high at first. Our SERPS have varied wildly since launch - at first I put this down to the age of the site. For the last month or two though, we've stabilised, around page 11-12.

In the last two weeks, however, things have gone crazy again. We've been as low as page 20, and as high as page 4. Weirder still, I was in Italy on Tuesday - and we were page 4 on google.co.uk - but back in the UK today, we're page 19, for the same search term.

Since we launched, I've been undertaking a reasonable link building campaign, not going crazy, and not trying to build excessive amounts of links too quickly. I don't think we link to any bad sites, and I don't think any bad sites link back to us.

One thing I *have* done in the last two weeks is change the content on the homepage ever so slightly - putting more emphasis on the "web design essex" keyphrase. The main content has stayed the same, but I've put some extra <em> and <strong> tags, and tweaked the headings a bit.

Could this have made a difference? Triggered an "over optimisation" penalty?

What else could be causing such drastic jumps in our SERPs?

Is it really just the fact we're still a relatively new site?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.. If anyone wants to check out our site, structure, and content, feel free.

For the record.. on google.com we're page 1/2, on yahoo.com/co.uk we're page 1, msn we're page 3 - so were doing *something* right - I just can't work out Google UK - which is the one that really matters to us.

that might be a punishment for using bad links building strategy.
