Unwanted 302 redirects being created by Wordpress

    Hi,

Since installing wordpress, whenever I check the stats using AWstats, I find a growing list of unwanted 302 temporary redirects. The htaccess file was correctly generated for the permalinks. There are no redirects set there and none were set on the BlueHost server.

It is a new installation of Wordpress that has been live for only 2 months. I am developing the site locally on my computer using a WAMP server, so I have done nothing to the live site except for updating the permalinks to /%postname%.html and I have posted one test post. I also installed a couple plugins recently but that didn't cause or alter the 302 situation.

I would dearly like to solve the problem before I transfer the local copy of the site to the live server at BlueHost. The BlueHost support people say it is nothing at their end, and that Wordpress is doing this. They checked my files and couldn't find the cause.

On the advice of the support people at BlueHost, I have since changed the site address within wordpress admin to use the www. I had set it to exclude that before. The thought there was that Wordpress was using a 302 to redirect any request using www to the address excluding the www. But the 302's persist.

My Son has the same problem on his site. He gets about 1000 unwanted 302's per month on a very low-traffic site. I'm hoping that means that this is a common issue that can be solved quickly :)

Would the feed have anything to do with this? Any ideas you have are appreciated. It's very important to me to avoid 302's on my site.

Thanks for any and all help,

    John

    Thanks,

I have emailed the plugin creator, as the version number in the php notes don't match the version on the download link. Also I want to see if it works with later versions of wordpress (I have 2.3.2). I can't see dates on the version numbers of the plugin. The latest date on the info page on his site is 2006.

I hope that will help, but I have the feeling I would have to know the specifics of the redirections to set up a correction using the plugin. Since my redirects are of an unknown nature, it may be difficult.

I wonder if there is a way to find out the details of the redirects. AwStats doesn't show details of 302's as they do for 404's for instance.

    Thanks,
    John

    Hi,

I believe that these 302's are coming from the admin part of the blog. Thus nothing to worry about.

You can check it by adding an extra section to your AWStats config file. I explain how here: AWStats HTTP Error Drilldown Functionality (don't forget to replace "500" by "302").

    Jean-Luc,

Thanks for that. I had a look at your page and I'd like to add that functionality to AwStats. On puring over my folders and files on the BlueHost server though, I can't see that folder. Would it be only accessible by the BlueHost staff or have I missed it somehow? I looked through everything (I think).

Also, I agree it sounds like they are coming from the WP admin part of the blog, but wouldn't 302 redirects be a concern no matter where they originate? In such numbers, would they not cause a problem with Google and my SERP inclusions? I just want to get started on the right foot, to avoid bigger issues down the line when my traffic is high.

    I appreciate your help,
    John

I don't know if you have access to your AWStats config file. Some hosts reserve access to the config file to their staff. The file should be called awstats.your_domain.conf.

If the 302's only happen within the admin section, this is not a problem, because these admin pages are password protected, thus they are not readable by Google and, of course, not indexed.

    Jean-Luc,

I understand now about the non-issue if the 302 is redirecting an admin file to another admin file. And of course that's exactly what the additional function in AwStats will tell me.

I managed to find the config file, this time using the cPanel File Manager, search function, rather than through ftp. I have edited it, and AwStats now shows the additional "Internal Server Errors 302" section. I'll wait now to see some accumulate and find out what they are.

Thank you so much for this help. I really appreciate it,

    Cheers,
    John

I recently submited a google sitemap and the google bot complained that it was getting 302 errors. Over time I thought the google bot was just being lazy, however I noticed it always errored on trackback links. People may be clicking your trackback links to the page which is causing all the 302 'errors'.

I am not completely sure but I am just saying what I noticed. Sorry if it doesn't help you at all.
