Firstly I apologize if this question have been asked before in this forum.

I am mostly familiar with meta name="description" and meta name="keywords".But while going through some websites I've came across some unusual meta tags. e.g: meta name="abstract", name="key-phrases", meta name="topic", meta name="subject" etc.

Does these tags really have any effect on any search engine? Or these tags can be called as "Myth"??

Those are optional Meta tags. They won't help much with the major search engines. The meta abstract for example can be used when you have specialized content and you want to be indexed by search engines related to your field.
Actually, meta abstract tag is not even part of the Google or Yahoo algorithm, maybe some small search engines include them.
    Hope it helps!

Anybody can create custom meta tags, and many html editors and software programs add their own meta tags. If you look at enough sites you are bound to come across some new or unusual meta tags, but they do not have any affect on search engine rankings.
