The short answer is Yes! The long answer is ... is your domain new? is it indexed by google? is the site seo friendly? Also it might be important to find out if there is any traffic on your niche. Just because you're number one for "how to make $$ selling circus midget's dental insurance" doesn't mean anything if no one searches it.
If that's the case, most likely your niche doesn't have any marketing value. But in some very rare cases, yes you can rank even without doing anything.

in that case, remember one thing - your site can't be more popular than the gaming site. do you really think that this gaming site has good long-term potential?
If there are no serps chances are very high its useless. research more before you jump into something.
You have probably already thought of this but consider pulling traffic to your site by using some long tail keywords that pertain to your specific niche as well as similar niches (other gaming referrences). If no one is searching for your niche then you will need to go out and find 'em.
You could get to number one for that phrase but you may not. You should check that people are searching for that phrase.
