There are really 2 types of website traffic your websites may be receiving which are targeted and Untargeted visitors.

Untargeted traffic is mainly visits to your websites by others who may or may not have an interest in what you're offering.

The trick to untargeted traffic is that you need lots of it. If you're promoting your site and you're not getting massive untargeted traffic, then chances are not many are going stay on your site for long. It has nothing to do with your website, but simply they we're not interested at the time.

Targeted traffic is visits to your websites by others who have an interest in what you're offering.

The trick to targeted traffic is simply taking the time to find your audience. Targeted visitors are more likely to stay and follow up on your website. Nonetheless making your targeted visitors feel as if you know them is also essential to getting conversions.

I focus on only targeted visitors and targeted visitors can be gotten from search engines as they are coming from searching keywords, they have already determined what to do when they visit the site.. if you are selling some stuffs on your website, you would be able to sell them.

Untargeted traffic is like going to a football game and trying to sell the 50,000 crowd haggis (sheep lung, heart and liver in sheep stomach) on a roll. Maybe that is exactly what one person in the crowd is feeling like eating. The other 49,999, well, not so much.

Targeted traffic is going to the same football game and selling hot dogs, chips and beer.

Find what your traffic wants to buy and sell it to them. So much easier.

Your primary goal is to get targeted traffic!
You can get targeted traffic from search engines,
if you've optimized your pages for keywords people are searching.
Your pages also need to get as much higher as possible search engine rankings.
Another way to get targeted traffic is using paid marketing techniques
like FB ads or Google Adwords.

I think this is a good analogy. You have to know your audience in order to sell to them. That's when the conversions come.

The core of getting good traffic to a landing page or website
it is based on two steps I would say.

    The first one would be:

Page optimization (keywords) regarding to your niche.

The second without any doubt would be:

Content You can drive ton of traffic to your site, but if
the content is not good or does not fill up your audience
expectations, all that traffic would go away the same way
    it came from.

Remember, content is what keeps people coming back for
more. We need to make our pages or websites sticky, to
keep our audience hungry for more of our killer content.

I hope that helps a little bit.
