I've been using AdSense and Analytics for a while on several sites, though am still learning the ropes. My question below might apply to many budding sitemasters. Analytics shows me that a certain few Google search keywords (apparently keywords related to specific video games) are reaching one of my game-related sites pretty heavily, but with a high bounce rate – my site doesn't deal with video games at all. Understandably, searchers are leaving quickly. My question: What's the most practical use to make of this unexpected traffic? Writing content aimed at those keywords doesn't make sense for my site. I could add a note directing searchers to the sites I think they're looking for, but is there a way to monetize that? Is there a way to specifically solicit AdSense ads from sites that I think are the searchers' targets? I can't find an answer within the Google AdSense site. I don't know that the ideal answer involves AdSense at all, so I've placed this question in the general Google forum. If there's a better place to ask it, please let me know. Any comments are greatly appreciated.
have small portion for it (quickly noticeable), then put adsense related to video game under that portion
If the volume is high enough, you can sell this traffic. Here's how: 1) Read the referrer information, and parse it for the unrelated keywords. 2) If the unrelated keyword(s) come up, display an appropriate advert to take them where they really wanted to go. This could be an affiliate ad, or you could have an agreement with the webmaster of a games website, for a fee. This should be fairly easy to code, talk to your developer.
Hi Im new here and cannot yet post a new thread, I have $27 in my moneybookers account and would need to exchange it to paypal, need it done really fast, please let me know how much PP you would send me. Will send first of course...will only trade with someone with a reputation. Thanks Dominique
I guess he's not worrying at all, he wants to monetize the traffic, not get rid of it. This may give some clue of what is already asked but not offered by the web. May be you should make a section on your site devoted to videogames?
if you are having traffic from a keyword, i suggest you to sell . you can make some easy money from that traffic
Thanks for the quick replies! @russianzio: I like your answer. As Germ suggests, I want to think of something useful to do with that traffic before Google does "fix" the situation. @trichnosis: If the site were being slammed by that incoming traffic, I would happily consider selling it... or just be happy no matter what I do. But it's not a big flow, just a relevant chunk of the site's overall modest traffic. Mainly, I'm only curious about strategy for monetizing unrelated traffic, in case this or some other site of mine generates real traffic in the future. Anyway, everyone's comments were helpful in confirming one thing: there doesn't seem to be some single "duh, everyone knows this" answer that my newbieness has overlooked. So, here's the simple step I've taken for now: I made both a sidebar and a page saying, "Are you looking for <video game name>? Sorry, this site deals with <site topic>, but feel free to look around." Followed by AsSense ads – which, bless Google, are already returning ads relevant to the video game in question. So in theory, those misdirected visitors will see the notice, and see Google's links which are relevant to what they were actually looking for, and click on through. I'll have to watch for a while and see whether this results in anything!
The only trouble is, this extra <video game name> text will make you rank even higher for that phrase. That's why I suggested a cloaked solution based on referrer, but I suppose the Adsense will do as a quick fix.
Well, I'm thinking I shouldn't mind being ranked higher for the phrase. The traffic doesn't bother me at all; I was just curious about smart things to do with it. If I can direct the traffic (via links) to what the searchers are actually looking for, and possibly gain a little AdSense action in the process, I'm happy with that! If this traffic does get considerably higher, I will certainly look into the referrer ideas as well. Thanks for the comments!
