YES.... They'll help a lot... But change your anchor text to get as many llinks as possible. i.e. different keywords...
google doesnt give you penaltys if your link is on a bad website only if the bad websites link is on your website
I think you guys need to do a little research into latent semantic indexing and the role of context to link value. Relevancy DOES matter.
Yes it does helps to have good links. But I have never heard of bad links It can be the scenario that you might get flagged for linking to bad site. But what can you do when a bad site links to you?
relevancy does matter but unrelated incoming links can't harm you......if that was the case then you could do a lot of harm to your competitors..

All backlinks are good as long as it's not from bad site. Much better if your backlinks are related to your site.
it's ok to get from unrelated but better with related site. make your own anchor links with your desired keywords. get links as much as you can is fine.
