I'm sorry if this had been brought up before, but I tried searching and all the results are from BST forums. What is the differences between unmanaged and fully managed dedicated server? Is it the pre-configures or is it the customer support? I'm quite new to dedicated hosting and I'm trying to learn here. Thanks in advance, Nattawat
managed means if some error occurs they will try to recover from it. But in unmanaged they will only reinstall the OS for any error.
1) By reinstalling the OS, what is the effects to the server? Will all of the files on FTP along with database be wiped clean? 2) What happens if managed servers are still unable to recover from the error then? 3) Since I've never used a dedicated server before, is it a wiser choice to choose fully managed? Or it doesn't make any differences anyway? Thanks
From the questions you are asking, go with a managed server. You don't want to deal with the hassles of system administration, setting up your own backups, etc. -Erica
Managed basically means that if there is a fault, then they will fix it for you. Unmanaged basically means that if there is a fault, you have to deal with the problems yourself, but they should be give you advice and such. Normally companies can charge you for fixing problems for you. In some companies I've seen, they charge around $30 to reinstall the OS. By reinstalling the OS, you'll more-than-likely lose all your files unfortunately. Always best to set daily backups just incase a problem arises. For you, I recommend a Managed server, since you're just getting started. Later, when you're more confident, you could go with an Unmanaged server.
with an unmanaged server they wont fix software related issues/upgrade probs whereas fully managed takes care of it all for you.
I've been looking into the prices and I'd say that managed services are not cheap at all I can afford as much as the price of the server alone, but not anything extra (which nearly doubles the server price). I would like to know how often does these problems occur... and will I be able to live without the managed service?
Well, you see fixing these errors are just time consuming, which is why you are paying the staff more so they can support you any time. I really don't suggest to go unmanaged if you don't have any idea on how webserver software works (and other components) For example, if you made a mistake your site goes down for 72 hours and you didn't pay the managed services, and you spend another day googling what's wrong and asking in forums while the staff can just spend the time finding out the errors and fix it for you in a few hours (varies) Is it worth it?
