Unlimited hosting- Where is the catch?

I am just curious... I have a account with bluehost and they say i can host unlimited websites, unlimited storage and bandwidth.

I am curious - where is the catch or loop.

I have 10 websites hosted and about 1-2 GB space used. My websites are low traffic websites

Do i need to worry about anything?

Unlimited Storage and Bandwidth mean that you can use the server resources without being limited, however the catch is that unlimited bandwidth is different from CPU Usage, you can stream your clips 1000 times but streaming 1000 times simultaneously will hike up the CPU and then you will be suspended for using a high amount of CPU.

My websites are static pages with no videos..So my usage should be low!

Another question: If I have you tube video embeded on website, -- Does it consume load of CPU or bandwidth?

Sorry am novice into all this!

If embedded video that it will not cause much problem since you did not stream the vids from the server.

Embedded videos are not consuming your bandwidth. Unlimited is a marketing term used lately. But... HDs have a size limit. Traffic pushed on a switch port has a limit. So unlimited doesn't exist. And people go for unlimited usually regret it, because they end up in a slow and overcrowded server.

ask them where they buy their "unlimited" hard drives from

tell them you own a site with 100 Terabytes of data and you want to upload it...see what they say

    "unlimited" is VERY limited,

just google "bluehost" and the word "problem", "scam", "rip-off" and see for yourself.

I believe that web hosting company is selling you unlimited space and bandwidth in hopes you will never use so much.

Its just a made-up word for the hosting companies to sell more. Some of them will cancel your account if your MySql database reaches 10000 files even if you are using only 500MB.

Most hosts oversell, such as blue host, host gator, etc.

They offer you these ridiculous packages in hopes of you never use it; guess what happens if you do use it?

Read their ToS on fair usage policy, they can legally cut you off at any given time.

They like many adopt a reasonable use policy. Like the comment above they do indeed have restriction on number of files you can store. They don't seem to worry too much about size of files however the number is another issues. I have used hostmonster a branch of bluehost in the past and found with 50K files they start to get funny about your usage. They told me this is because if impacts on the backup of the system and other users. They later told me although they state 50K files they allow upto 200K. If however they warn you to lower the number and then at a ltaer date you pass the limit they will can your account without any further warnings.

With bandwidth I use other companies that state unlimited traffic but after pushing 60gig a month they get funny and want you to move to dedicated or VPS solutions.

finally you will also find things like email limits aren't listed and don't fall into the unlimited category. Most shared hosting companies only allow 1 email every 8 seconds or 500 an hour so if you are running mailing lists you could be heading for issues.

    I hope this helps

Of course, unlimited web hosting does not exist and it's just a promotional trick. However, in most cases "unlimited" means that you get more than necessary. I had been using ~ 15GB space and about 100GB bandwidth a month at iPage and FatCow and I didn't encounter any problems. I'm not 100% sure about limits of "unlimited" BlueHost plans, but I'm pretty confident that you should not worry about your 1-2GB websites.

"Unlimited" is nothing but a gimmick to lure unknowing, amateur web developers in to purchasing a service. They set "soft" limits that basically set off some red flags if you are going over the normal amount of bandwidth/storage space used. If you look at their ToS, they probably have a clause that says that you cannot have unreasonable data usage, or they will shut you down. Find web hosting with set limits that you probably wont surpass, and ensure they have multiple levels of hosting plans if you need to scale up. You should already know your usage now, just make and educated guess keeping in mind how fast your site is growing.

Most sites don't use that many resources, therefore looking for an all you can use style package isn't in your best interest most of the time.

Find someone who gives you a decent amount of CPU and RAM resources and has a decent backbone.

I have been using an Unlimited service and have never had any problems - I'm sure some companies try to "trick" clients into it - but this is not to say that unlimited does not exist.

I provide the same services and the only limit for the unlimited is you cannot use the storage as backup, no download sites - only if the website goes OVER a certain percentage of the total server power, is when the sites need to be moved to a dedicated server - and this applies to all web hosting.

So even your "limited" packages will ask you to upgrade onto servers - and its no scam or trick - you cannot run a high powered web-site on a simple shared server with other sites on the same server.

I have over 2,000 sites on my package with the unlimited plan for my clients - the only ones who had problems were the ones trying to upload their backup files onto the server.

I hope this makes sense =)
