Unlimited bandwidth/space...BLERG!

Ok, this needs to be said.
I think it probably is already said but...for crying out loud.

Also I know that I'm new here, but this just irritates me ALOT.

I just readed a thread, not saying what thread exactly but let's just say "unlimited space" and "unlimited bandwidth".

    Now, 99,99% uptime...wow! For only 2$!!! Unbelievable...and yes, you shouldn't believe it.

The thing is, with unlimited hosters that they mostly restrict you alot trough there ToS so in short the whole unlimited thing is just a catchy word used for marketing.

And they oversell...ALOT, they oversell so much in fact that it will makes your eyes bleed.

Buying things cheap comes, specially in the hosting world, back at a high price.
Down times, bad support, no money refund, hoster just gone (readed several story's also on other forums and own experience).

My advice is..don't let the whole unlimited thing fool you..stick with a nice but decent host and always expect what you pay for.

I have experience with around 23 hosts, and about 8 offered unlimited and at first they are always nice...but then the shit hits the fan, downtime, "hdd crashes" etc. etc.

Really, people...THINK, don't let them fool you :(
Also a small warning for the hosters offering unlimited stuff at ridiculous prices, people who buy your packages also demend the most support, hence..your screwed ^^

I also feel sorry for people who sign up for these kinds of hosts. While i understand that you feel comfortable with thinking "i have lots of room to expand!" and seeing the infinity symbol next to disk space and bandwidth, it doesn't mean your site will be up enough for you to use it all.

Go with a non-overseller, get the smallest plan and upgrade when you need too. Not only will you save money, you will feel safer. :)

I agree. It is nearly impossible to max out the bandwidth that hosts offer without overloading the server and getting kicked out.

I know, I run a good website hosting company and we do not oversell.

    Corporate Internet Solutions

Our prices are fair, and you get a free domain name, scripts, and more... BUT>>> All clients here on DP seem to get dragged into the "CHEAP", and "UNLIMITED" website hosting plans.

    ~ Mike

EDIT: I have seen it happen so many times, and all of these "Overnight" hosting companies just tend to get the money and vanish!

If the trader has good reputation on DP then what goes on trying?? If they are new then be cautious.

There is nothing that is "unlimited" there is allways a catch.

The seller has to make money, accept it and then make your choice. The provider often use this sort of tricks when they eiter got alot of wasted capacity or just simply needs some fast cash.

If the customer then starts to consume loads of resources the provider will have to take action to make sure he does not lose money.

There is only like 1% that actually use their 10GB of HD space and like 1% that use more then 1TB of bandwidth. Those 1% are OK to piss of by turning of the switch for those accounts.

If you like to have shitload of capacity then you have to look for a dedicated server with a 10mbit line or something.

That is not always true! Even reputable long time members can scam people. Look around the forum a while and you will see that has happened.

There is no such thing as unlimited anything with hosting. Any server has to have some limits unless they are planning to buy a new server for you every time you need one.

There are some very reasonable hosting plans out there that are not unlimited. You need to talk to people you know and get a recommendation. I have been with the same host for over a year. I meant the owner here on DP and he has served me well for my needs and the cost is quite cheap. However, he offers no crazy promises of unlimited anything and I in return am not a resource hog.

It is a case pf buy what you need and buy from only reliable recommended host. If it is too good to be true, move on.

Lets say that the iTrader is like eBay feedback. The web hosting client will post feedback/iTrader points as soon as they get their web hosting details and they work. This boosts their reputation, and everyone will think they are not a scam.

All you can do is be careful.

I completely agree with you and I'm finally glad to see some people are speaking up about this. Too many people are overselling and now they're using "unlimited". The worst part is that, many people are falling for it. Hosts just say that they'll continue to upgrade their HD's and network to compensate for diskspace and bandwidth, but honestly how many hosts would actually spend money to do that. The only host I know that would probably do that is Hostgator as they're a pretty well established company. If you can't find or buy an "unlimited" hard drive, then there probably is no such thing as "unlimited" hosting.

The only reason that you "agree" is so that you can sell your crap hosting accounts that are useless.

    That is correct.

"Unlimited" is a marketing technique to get clients.

    It is "OVERSELLING"!..

Many people still buy it though and when they do reach a "Limit", then alot of issues arise.

Many people have good things to say about "Unlimited" website hosting... BUT!...

They have not reached the "Limit" yet... It will and shall happen sooner or later...
