Thanks Jay
Unique Visitors are real people. Hits include bots spidering your site, etc... Ask the guys in your sig.
Unique visitors are real people as they say and they can be first time visitors who can return back to the site... if hits, there are lots of automatic softwares to generates tons of hits...
Unique visitors is more important than hits cause it is a basis of how good and visible your site is (but still depends on some other factors i.e. bounce rate)
They are right, unique visitors are more important than hits. The more unique visitors you have the better.
Unique visitors are real visitors counted with a 24 Hours interval. Hits including PageViews viewed by a user. (correct me if i am wrong..)
Many people tend to use “hits†as a catch phrase for traffic hitting a web site. This is NOT true. Traffic should always be analyzed in two categories, hits and visitors. A “visitor†is ESSENTIALLY a unique person entering your website. The server logs will attribute one unique visitor no matter how many pages he views. For example, a person entering a brick n’ mortar bookstore is only one potential customer regardless of the number of books the person looks at. A “hit†represents how many times visitors clicked site pages. Going back to our bookstore example, every book viewed by the person in the bookstore would be a hit.
Hits can be artificially inflated depending on the structure of your website. Put up a page with dozens of pictures on it, and one visit can result in 100's of "hits". A hit is actually any file that is delivered to the visiting client. An html page, a css, an image file, a flash object, etc. Each of those is a "hit". But compare that to another page that is just text, and one visitor will equal one hit. So, it really depends on the site, and the page, etc. So it's not as relevant as unique visitors. However, that doesn't mean it's without worth. For instance, if you have 1 unique visitor on 11/20 and 10 hits. That tells you one thing. But, if you have 1 unique visitor on 11/21 and 80 hits. That means something different. It tells you that your visitors are spending more time on your site. So, unique visitors are ultimately the most important. But you want a high level of hits/pages per visitor which means you're getting higher interaction with the visitors that do come by. Make sense? MR
