It's hard for anything to be entirely unique, and i beleive it to be a myth that google actively search out duplicate content and penalize for it.

Just try and have a little more respect for the origional writer, link to the source, ask permission, write an article on the same topic but dont copy the guy, give your own view points.

Unique is key to more than just SERP's.

Absolutely a mixture of unique and reused content is okay, especially if like the other poster says you are providing backlinks or acknowledgement to the original author. Sounds like you are doing that!

That said, with an extremely new site you're best off providing as much original content as possible in the beginning to make it look fresh in the search engines. I've found Google to be extremely forgiving of duplicate content when I put it on my PR4 and PR5 websites, but not so forgiving when I put it on a new site with lower rank.

The mixture of unique content + duplicate content = New content.

But in order to check that your content is new or not. just check it out at copyscape

Nothing new under the sun, aye! Seems like everyone's a copy cat nowadays all that you say or write has been said in some other way or form.

    ;) :) :D

Every new idea or something like that is a well forgotten old one.

Your duplicate content will demolish the reputation of your unique content. That is what the difference is :)

Unique content long lasting and better results. While duplicate content will not survive for long and will only lower your reputation.

No content is ever unique we have to make it unique.

Just go to wikipedia get some knowledge about any topic, read some article related with it and edit it to make your own unique content.

    hi,
it depends on search engines how they differentiate and what is the algorithm they have for checking duplicate content.

I have a site with both unique and duplicated content.
Within 2 month my PR jump to 2 and site's are well indexed, got pretty good Alexa ranking.

So there's no prob mix both of em.
But again Google is getting smarter every day.

The main thing is that Search engine won't be able to identify your content as duplicated...If it won't you can treat your mixed content as yours...

Well my page is made out of sections, that are entirely copied, or better said there are other webpages that have the same content, because we use the same Email lists to get the announcements from etc.
But I have other sections, that are entirely written by me, and google has no big problems with my site, and I rank 1 site for a couple of keywords.
So, just do both, and of course, linking and all.

What if, i have a website with only duplicate contents, articles from those articles directories.

and now, i decide to stop that, and start with fresh new unique content.

    what will happen?

As far as I see it, it won't help you a lot, because all these blogs will be seen as copied material... The links could help you a bit, but the content won't do it that much.
At least what you can do is get an auto spinn script to spin the articles for you, but....
Unique articles will do the best for you, if you ask me. This way you won't really get a lot of traffic
