Subdomains that are on topic are a decent thing.

Actually About.com uses subdomains and the whole site has varied topics. They seem to rank well in various topics too. And i think it is not really that blackhat.

About.com is a portal similarly rediff, indiatimes, blogspot.....are portals as well. There is nothing wrong or unethical for them to have sub domains on varied topics. what i am talking about is that what about small websites. Like i am a manufacturer of bags and i own a website - www.bags.com, now as my site is listed in yahoo / dmoz i offered someone to make a subdomain on my domain to promote his services like seo.bags.com. Now isnt it fooling search engines to gain rankings?

It looks like the general consensus so far is that each subdomain would be judged on its own merits indepentant of the main domain when it comes to ethics.

If you do unethical things with the subdomain, then its unethical. Merely creating a subdomain that differs in subject matter isn't unethical in the least.

Where does it state anywhere (even by the SE's) that subdomains have to be related to the domain?

Thanks for clearing the issue, so there is no problem and i can take any yahoo / dmoz listed domain, make a subdomain on it and promote it. It has nothing to do with the fact that subdomain is nowhere related to main domain.

The only exceptions would be obvious ones like having a porn site subdomain on a childrens domain, etc

Ahh, now I see what you are talking about, actually I have seen something like this already.

I have seen a blog of a well known SEO guy that I am sure all of you have heard about, where he placed a poker site subdomain. His blog never had links going to the poker site. And the poker site has no links going to blog. It was like:

    http://www.somepopularseoguy.com

and the poker site was on:

    http://pokersite.somepopularseoguy.com

And the reason why he did it maybe was to get it in the SERPs right away since his domain is somewhat trusted already.

Today... the subdomain no longer exist. And the pokersite has it's own domain. But the subdomain can still be seen somewhere in one of the SEs cache. And that is how I found out about it and when clicked, they 301 to the current domain name.

    Now back to the question...

Now is it ethitical or not?

Hmmm I really don't know. I think it can be unethical since it is really trying to get the trusted domain advantage. And once the PR sets in, the 301 redirect happens to the new domain. In a way it is trying to influence the SEs to gain the trust rank.

Now should it be done or not? Hmmm maybe it also depends on the client. Let's say you want to do this the right way, you are 100% white as snow. But the client does not really care, and is willing to pay high and wants results as soon as possible. I guess it will depend on you if you are willing to do it or not.
