Understanding RSS & XML Feeds

I'm really trying to understand RSS and XML feeds. All I know is every time I post to my blog or twitter account, I go to Feedage and create a feed, then test that it is correct then ping both the site and feed.

But I also see I have a feed account with G and Adsense for feeds. Sometimes I have 50 feeds sometimes I have 1 in the Adsense being 'hit'

So what is the best way to really understand feeds, why I am doing all that I am doing, and why does Adsense have 50 feeds sometimes and 1 or 2 sometimes.

I do understand I am trying to drive traffic to the site but that's as far as I understand it.

Do I keep a list of my feeds? Why? Where?
Who gets the feeds? Sites? People?
How do you know anyone is reading your feeds? Adsense?
Does Blogger have a ping setting like Word Press (they have a place to to list places you want to sent a ping to)
Is pinging really important for traffic increase?

Thanks everyone for the answers, help and guidance!:)
