Understanding Hosting Options

    Hi There,

I am hoping that some of you could please explain the options I have for hosting my website. I think I understand the basics, but I am a bit unsure how it works in regards to outsourcing development etc.

    Below is my understanding:

    - Own Server Hosting: This is where I would have my own server where I host the information.

    - Commercial Hosting: This would be having my sites hosted by GoDaddy, Crazy Domains etc

    - 3rd Party Hosting: This is where my website is hosted by the web developer.

Currently I have the 3rd Party Hosting option, where my web developer looks after everything. My concern however is that if something happens to my Web Developer, I wouldn't know where to start in terms of accessing everything I need, to pass onto another web developer.

My other concern is whether a new web developer would be able to carry on developing the website, based on the previous developers files, or whether they would need to start from the beginning again.

So in summary, I have the following questions:

    1. What is the physical process for changing web hosting companies?
    2. If I found a new developer, what would I need to provide them with / access to?
    3. Would a new developer be able to continue on using all my previous files, or would it be too confusing for them, hence they would need to do everything from scratch?

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

    Cheers

    Jake

Many hosting companies provide cPanel for managing websites /emails/databases/cron jobs, etc.
You just need to pass the username/password of the cPanel to take full control of the website.

    1. Many hosts provide free website transfers with there hosting packages. You would only need to provide them with the current hosting information from your developer.
    2. You could provide future developers control panel access, while you still own the hosting account itself.
    3. Your new developer should be able to continue updating your current site without needing to start over.

    1. What is the physical process for changing web hosting companies?

You ( or your hosting provider) make the site back and you ( or your new hosting provider) transfer it to the new hosting provider and restore it there.

    2. If I found a new developer, what would I need to provide them with / access to?
You will need to provide them with access to your FTP account so that they could modify your site.

    3. Would a new developer be able to continue on using all my previous files, or would it be too confusing for them, hence they would need to do everything from scratch?

It depends on the site and its scripts. Sometimes it is better to continue the site development. In some cases it is not possible to continue developing sites and the best variant is to create the site from scratch.
