I wrote one that luckily worked. It copied all of the existing photos to the new directories, renamed them and replaced the underscores to hyphens, and then also renamed all of the filenames in the database. Now the new photos with the new names and directories are in place, while the main page addresses haven't changed. All the cached pages in google still work because the old files are still there, and will now hopefully change after the next crawl. Then I can go in and delete them.

I vote for "-" not "_", as I have found that "-" is read as a space by the SE's. Anyone with me?

    Regarding image files in particular:
After doing some google image searches for non popular keywords such as my surname (couple dozen to couple hundred results) , it seems that, in general, the results held to the following pattern... at least from my very limited, unscientific tests.

Single word (sometimes just one keyword) seemed to rank near the top. Followed by those with a hyphen: "-"
Followed by those with underscores: "_"
Images w/ a blank space between keywords were intermixed in the bottom 3/4's of results, only rarely near the top: " "

Again, only looked at search prhases that yield a small number of results so I could quickly try and identify patterns. Again, just generalizations since the results were pretty well mixed with all four versions... But the pattern tended toward the above results.

Result: I don't think it matters a whole lot. I will continue to use hyphens for my images.
