Uncommon Website Monetization Strategy

Has anyone tried creating a paid web directory on their existing website? I found this idea on this blog post.

It seems like it wouldn't be too hard if you have a site with good traffic and pagerank. Just install a directory script to manage it.

Then, promote it multiple ways. Blogging, forum posts, adwords. You could even write a press release about your new paid web directory. Also, put your directory in a place where internet users can easily find it. Link to it from your home page, above the fold, to attract potential buyers.

If you price it well, you should be able to attract customers. And you can do lifetime links in the beginning, because webmasters love lifetime links.

Also, I'm wondering about which sites to approve in the directory. I'm thinking of just approving related sites and quality sites.

Is this a good plan? Would adding a paid directory to an existing site be worth it?

If you have other directory tips, I'd love to hear them :)

I was actually recently thinking of doing just this on my automotive online shop. A nice automotive directory could work a treat and bring in some extra revenue.

The site also has awesome Google rankings so could even boost my visitor count etc

When I have time I might give it a go.... keyword there being TIME.

ruby, good luck with that. Sounds like a paid directory would be awesome for your site, your customers, and the directory submitters. Win-win-win for everyone! :)

Several people do this already, expect that the directory usually features their reciprocal links partners.

I think the key too making money is not requiring a reciprocal link. One way links seem to be much more valuable than reciprocal ones.

Just my opinion, but I'm think google will start cracking down and devaluing obvious reciprocal links like those on directories.

It's like we're entering into a new age of link building.

Yeah, I think directories relying on reciprocal links will die a horrible death in the near future.

The only ones that will survive will be the ones with tons of reciprocal backlinks like blogcatalog.com. I heard that blogcatalog.com has a million backlinks!
