Many people are not aware that the thousands of spam comments lying unattended in your blog can affect SEO, this blog post in Problogger states some of its consequence towards bad impact in ranking; http://www.problogger.net/archives/2006/04/27/the-cost-of-comment-spam/

I've found very easy method to delete thousands and thousands comments at a time since there is no any reliable plugin to delete thousands of comments at once and to delete individual posts is time consuming. If you're looking for easy method to enlighten your blog from the burden of spammy links and bad neighbourhood, just PM me. :)

That's why it's better to have comment moderation turned on and have akismet installed as a plugin. That would at least act as first line of defense.

That's exactly what we do as well. And it's really helped.

We did recently install Do Follow and CommentLuv, which I'm sure will somewhat increase our level of spammy comments. But will also hopefully encourage some more interaction on our blog.

If you use wordpress then Akismet could help you much in filter spam comments out. However, most of wordpress and other blog platform default setting is to not show comments until it has been approved first. As long as the spam comments are in your moderation and not being shown then it should not effect your ranking. My blog has been spammed for almost 1k garbage comments a day and none of them being shown in any single posts. :)

Spam comments can effect your ranking for sure, even all of them marked as "nofollow". Google will give no weight and PR leaked but they still crawl to see who you are linking to and 100% of spam comments linking to "bad neighborhood" like gambling, betting, viagra, xanax, cialis and more.

But Akismat is not sufficient to filter all spam, my akismat is active but yet it fail to filter all spam. I delete it manually in bulk, seems during recession period spammers are more active. :)

Askimet works for me. Barely 1% of spam escapes detection.

I set up the wordpress blog, using the Akismet plug-ins. Spam comments are blocked, one month after the deleted automatically. Moreover, wordpress can be set, the first visit to the need to review comments, or comment on the contents of more than one link on the need to audit ,and other functions!
