I have already tried this and maybe I'm doing something wrong, but forums haven't helped me yet (especially since I can't have a sig here yet) with advertising. However, forums have helped me to get some backlinks to my websites. If you are trying to use SEO for your website and you are a member of multiple forums, then all of these are potential ways to help your site rank higher.
